geoffrey beene 1960s sequin column dress
available is a rare and iconic 1960s geoffrey beene sequin houndstooth column dress. early in his career while designing experimental but massively wearable pieces, beene felt that evening wear had become too structured, "incompatible with the modern taste for freedom." this dress is very much a product of that time, with its playful take on a classic houndstooth pattern by adding sequins for shine and texture, as well as a sporty racerback bodice that contradicts the typical "evening gown" of that era and was likely revolutionary for that time. attached are also photos of his famous football jersey gowns from that era that continue with the sporty motif. an important piece of fashion history for the right collector.
beene was incredibly conscious of the human body, and was particularly regardful of the figure in motion - as beene once said “clothing is nothing until it hits the body." his designs were created to work with a woman's body, encasing it lightly and giving it a more artful structure. this dress is a more substantial woven wool with some weight and you can see how the weight holds the structure of the dress in the videos, as the model moves. the dress features a side slit, side zip closure with hook and snap button closures at shoulders. silk-lined.
fits like a small, in excellent condition - there is some wear on some of the blue sequins and some lightened discoloration in the silk lining.
