harvey berin was in a group of clothing manufacturers who prospered after world war II. known for their stylish and expensive clothes, they helped dispel the hold that french fashion had on the industry, though most did travel to paris for inspiration. the clothes the americans offered, however, had their own style and were not as complicated as those from france. after years of total subservience to french designs, these houses contributed to the growing independence of american fashion.

berin was a big name in the 1950's and was known for making 'first "big grown up dresses"'. until the 60's, designers tended to be anonymous workers in the back rooms of fashion houses and it was the manufacturer's name that was on the label. ''harvey never let the designer do everything. he always directed the show.''

available is a 1950s harvey berin black lace gown, featuring a boat neck, slightly higher waist, and chartreuse/mustard contrast silk satin lining that adds depth and brightness to this otherwise all black gown. there's a thing matching black belt and back zip closure. the lining itself is also lined in a silk organza.
